The Forgotten Holocaust

You’ve heard of the Holocaust and how many innocent people were hurt and killed ubt have you heard of the forgotten Holocaust? The Rape of Nanking is considered the forgotten Holocaust, in which many people were killed, injured, or raped. World War II was one of the most horrific events that has taken place. Within World War II, the Holocaust occured. In the Holocaust, about 6 million Jewish people were killed. People are educated on the Holocaust, but what about the forgotten Holocaust. Not only Oak Ridge High School students should be aware of this topic, but adults across the globe too. This topic is horrible and forgotten by many. Where nearly 200,000 people died and 20,000 women were raped. This topic, The Rape of Nanking, is important as it showed the atrocities performed by the Japanese military onto the innocent citizens and it is a forgotten Holocaust.

World War II which started in the late 1930’s, led to many deaths and injuries. The Germans were using the Jewish people as scapegoats for World War 1. The Third Reich offered to deport these people but other countries opposed taking them in. The opposing countries are believed to cause the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a genocide performed by Nazi Germany. The Japanese felt like they had the need to show off their military muscle. The Japanese began their expansion in East Asia in the year of 1931 with the invasion of Manchuria. The Japanese declared war on China in 1937. The capital of China at the time, Nanking, was taken over by the Japanese in the Battle of Nanking. General Matsui the leader of the Japanese army ordered the destruction of the city of Nanking. In the process of destroying the city, the soldiers did horrifying things to the innocent civilians. Historians are still unsure why but, the soldiers decided to torture most civilians, murder men and rape women. The Japanese wanted to build an Empire and take over all of Asia. The government of Japan had believed that the only way to gain solve economic issues was to take over and expand territorial. This ultimately led to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The bombing in which 2,000 Americans were killed and nearly 20 Naval ships were destroyed. Japan hoped that the attack on the United States Navy, would give them time attack and conquer The Dutch East Indies and The Philippines. The Japanese believed that as the Navy recovered from the attack, they would not be able to defend these territories.

The Rape of Nanking is a series of horrible and brutal actions on the Chinese executed by the Japanese army. “Overall, most Americans had only a passing knowledge or little interest in Asia.” (The History Place). Americans did not know or care to know what was happening in Nanking at the time. The Americans were fearing their own lives and countries future. This is one of the main reasons why it is considered the forgotten Holocaust. Americans were oblivious to this situation happening in Nanking, not only Americans didn’t know but many people around the world had no idea. A Japanese book writer, named Nobukatsu Fujioka stated that, “It was a battlefield so people were killed but there was no systematic massacre or rape”.  He believes that the Battle of Nanking had occurred but, not the whole rape incident. The evidence provided to him Fujioka believes that, “All of the photographs that China uses as evidence of the massacre are fabricated”. He goes on to say that all the evidence is fake. The Chinese used paid prostitutes and fabricated the whole situation to

make the Japanese seem like horrible people. In Japanese schools, they do not teach much about the Rape of Nanking but about the Battle of Nanking.

The Rape of Nanking is considered to be one of the worst things that occured during World War II aside from the war itself. “The six weeks of carnage would become known as the Rape of Nanking and represented the single worst atrocity during the World War II era..” (The History Place). Six weeks of Japanese soldiers massacring civilians and raping innocent women in the streets. Some believe that the Rape of Nanking is considered a genocide not just a massacre. These Japanese soldiers just wanted to show how strong they are. The military leader did not order them to execute not partake in these activities which injured and scarred many civilians.

People should know and understand what took place in Nanking in 1936. Not only just briefly covering in the broad spectrum of World War II but investigating what happen and feel what horror it was to be a civilian of Nanking at the time. The American people need to be more well-educated on the subject of the Rape of Nanking. Students in high school should be taught this disastrous act by the Japanese. Within their world or US history classes, teachers should spend more than ten or so minutes on the subject. Teachers should give the students a glimpse into what it was like to be an innocent horrified Chinese civilians. Teachers should give a lesson on the atrocity and activities to follow.
